Absentminded April

Where in the world did this month go? I remember April 1, no fooling, but the other twenty-nine days flew by in a blur. While my arms and legs completed the necessary mundane daily tasks of living, my mind took a vacation somewhere on its own. The month passed by like a fast moving train, and I accomplished no notable or satisfying achievements along the way. April 30th arrived on time with me inside the train but my brain absent. Either I live a boring life, or my mind operated on auto-pilot for the last thirty days . . . or maybe both.

Regardless the reason, I aim to live May as if April never existed or exited so fast. Move it or use it a doctor once told me, so effective immediately I’m returning to my three times a week exercise program. Studies show moderate physical activities like walking produce the same positive mental and physical benefits as more strenuous workouts. If you’re a resident couch potato, I encourage you to get off your spud and kick up a little dirt somewhere away from the television. As for engaging my mind, I’m tackling a project I put off for years, a personal one guaranteed to challenge my brain cells and deliver a tremendous victory on the home court. If you find yourself cruising through multiple days in robot mode, I encourage you to treat yourself to a dessert moment. Not by eating a piece of cake or pie, preferably chocolate in my case, but by doing something enjoyable and completely out of your normal routine.

As I discovered in April, life speeds by way too fast. To slow it down, we need to enjoy each day as it comes. In the future, let’s commit to living with a purpose and driving toward a specific destination instead of riding along to who knows where. I’ll update you on my progress next month.

What goal would you like to accomplish this year?
