September Surprises

For once, September arrived in the South with cooler temperatures and less humidity, at least where I live. In addition I received two more surprises. My true animal story “Never Underestimate a Bird Brain” will appear in the December release of Callie Smith Grant’s Consider the Birds (published by Revell). The book contains 40 heartwarming true stories about the beauty and intelligence of birds and their exceptional connection to people. If you’re an animal lover or know someone who is, pre-order the paperback now at a 40% discount and receive free shipping. Click here to read a sample and order the book.
My second surprise requires me to disclose a personal dietary fact—popcorn and I parted ways three years ago over a significant disagreement. A small piece of kernel wished to reside under my gum line, and I objected to its new home. After several painful days, the conflict ended when my water flosser dislodged the squatter with force and washed it down the sink drain. When I told my dental hygienist about the episode, she suggested I stay away from the irritating offender, and I heeded her advice until a few weeks ago.
What happened next is my husband’s fault. Out of the blue he advocated we go to the movie theater, something we haven’t done in three years. After I recovered from the shocking proposal of someone who sleeps through every movie we watch at home, I agreed because dinosaur movies are more exciting when viewed on a large screen. The next day we drove to the theater and entered a lobby filled with the incredibly tempting smell of freshly made buttery popcorn. Yes, at this very theater I ate the handful of popcorn resulting in my short-lived but memorable gum war. With that awful experience fresh on my mind, I only bought a bottle of water at the concession stand this time. However, my wonderful husband purchased a tub of popcorn, added more butter, and had the audacity to ask if I wanted some of it.

If you think I said, “no, thank you,” I appreciate your positive thoughts about my character. The truth is I said, “well, uh, maybe one bite,” which led to dozens more and me consuming half of the tub. OH-MY-GOODNESS, that popcorn tasted divine, salted just right with the perfect crunch and flavor, plus the adventure movie met my expectations and kept my husband awake the entire time. Did I battle another corn kernel later? Absolutely not. Will I eat more popcorn in the future? Maybe. My September surprises turned out well, and I wish you a fall full of pleasant temperatures and gorgeous autumn colors.
What enjoyable event or adventure have you experienced this year?
