Never Too Old

How old is too old? All depends on who you ask. At 351-years-old, Florida’s Castillo de San Marco sure looks good for her age. The Spanish established present day St. Augustine in 1565 and decided they needed more than a wooden fort to repel their British and French enemies. Construction of the Castillo began in 1672, and locally quarried coquina stone withstood cannon ball attacks for the next two centuries. Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, the Castillo became a national monument in 1924, and restoration efforts during the 1930s ensured the fort’s remarkable history continues today—living proof you’re never too old to make a difference on this planet.
