Rivers of Light

On one of our recent meandering day trips, we wandered down a road never traveled before. At least by us. Not many others either—considering the road was narrow, often unpaved, and winding up and over several mountains. At times the forest was so thick only streams of light filtered through the tree canopy, continuously shedding leaves and acorns with every puff of breeze. Miles later we finally reached a narrow cove and were rewarded with gorgeous natural and man-made wonders. Where is this extraordinary place? Sorry, but you’ll have to read next week’s post for the big reveal. Yes, today is a teaser, and I’m only slightly apologetic for it. Hey, I’m human and known to play occasional tricks. Like disguising Christmas gifts, throwing surprise parties . . .

But God never plays tricks, and James 1:16-18 explains why. “So, my dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures.” Wow, what a wonderful discovery to find out God considers each of us something beautiful and worthy of beneficial gifts.

How have you been unexpectedly and pleasantly surprised? Was it a kind word, random act of kindness, unexpected blessing?
